I decided to start this newsletter the day that Angelica Cheung shared with the (fashion) world her new carreer path.
I am extremely attracted to this kind of profile, people who have "many lifes", why? Probably because I have already two lifes: one in the financial industry and another one in the luxury sector. But specially because I would like to think I still have some lifes to live.
Angelica studied law and literature, she worked for newspapers and magazines and when she felt ready to become a lawyer was contacted by Conde Nast to launch the Chinese Vogue. She jumped into this opportunity and in 2005 became the youngest Vogue Editor.
Angelica ruled it for 16 years, her sucess goes beyond the market share of the magasine, she was also key in helping foreign brands work in China and local models reach international presence.
She also helped international photographers understand the complex Chinese culture and make editorials that are not clichés and/or offensive.
As an example, this cover from the Vogue Magasin I treasure from my first trip to China in April 2018.
And now?
She joined Sequoia Capital and as she explains she will still support "the new generation of Chinese innovation and international brands expanding into China, but with a much wider scoop.”
Her impact and influence is going to reach a new level, and she already talks about the contagious energy of startup founders on her personal instagram page.
The luxury industry, trends and its profesionals are changing, if you want to discover them together subscribe :) see you very soon.
Warmly,
ILM
